Avon Barn a No!

The final results of a town survey querying Avon residents about the future of the Hahnewald Barn have been counted. The final count at 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday recorded 104 votes in support of the project, and 891 votes against the project.

Back on February 12th, the Town Council voted 4-3 to proceed with Phase 1 of the Hahnewald Barn Project. Council directed Town staff to proceed with the $1.6 million Scheme B, Phase I project as presented by Andersen Hallas Architects.  Phase I involves moving the Barn structure to the former Town Hall site, demolishing the former Town Hall structure, constructing a permanent foundation, placing the barn structure on the new foundation and replacing the roof covering.  Phase I does not include any additional improvements.

After receiving substantial public input in support and opposition to the Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project, the Town Council passed a motion at the February 26th Town Council meeting to refer a survey question to registered Avon voters concerning the Project. The Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project Survey Question was mailed to all qualified Avon electors on March 12th and voters had up until 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday to submit their ballot.

Although the survey had the look and feel of an official special election, including a required signature field and secrecy sleeve, the results of the survey do not bind the Town to a decision. The Town Council is slated to address the Hahnewald Barn Phase 1 Project at the April 9th Town Council meeting.
