Two-time Audi FIS Alpine World Cup overall champion Lindsey Vonn (Vail, CO) is one of 12 world class athletes nominated by the United States Sports Academy as its 2009 Female Athlete of the Year. Voting closes Dec. 24, so fans should cast their votes for Vonn today at http://ussa.edu/ballots/athlete-of-the-year. Fans may vote as often as you like.

The Athlete of the Year ballot is the culmination of the Academy’s yearlong Athlete of the Month program, which recognizes the accomplishments of men and women in sports around the globe. The Academy Athlete of the Month is selected by an international voting committee comprised of members of the media, sports organizations and governing bodies.

Vonn, the 2008 World Cup overall and downhill champion, built upon her legacy during the 2009 season as she accumulated the most World Cup wins of any American female skier, surpassing U.S. great Tamara McKinney's previous high mark of 18 established in the 1980s with an astounding 22 wins. She also swept the women's speed events at Audi FIS Alpine World Championships with two gold medals. Vonn then closed the season with her second consecutive World Cup overall and downhill titles as well as the first super G title awarded to a U.S. woman.

The United States Sports Academy is an independent, nonprofit, accredited, special mission sports university created to serve the nation and the world with programs in instruction, research and service. The role of the Academy is to prepare men and women for careers in the profession of sports.
