The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind people of Colorado House Bill 09-1094 which goes into effect today, December 1, 2009.

The Bill prohibits anyone under the age of 18 from using a wireless telephone (cell phone) while operating a motor vehicle.  No cell phone use of any kind.

The Bill also prohibits drivers 18 years of age or older from any form of manual data entry into a wireless telephone while the motor vehicle they are operating is in motion.  Manual data entry includes texting, checking email, or even dialing a telephone number.

Wireless telephones may be used for communication while the vehicle is at rest in a shoulder lane or lawfully parked.  They may also be used in an emergency or to contact public safety entities.

The penalty for this violation is a total fine of $50.00 and one point from your driver's license.  Any subsequent violation has an associated fine of $100.00 and one point from your driver's license.

The Colorado State Patrol would like to remind all motorists of the new law as it takes effect, today, December 1, 2009.
