Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen, the legendary Robben Ford and the phenomenal
rising star Ruthie Foster perform a very special evening of gutar heavy rock music at
the Vilar Performing Arts Center Tuesday night.
The guitar is the foundation upon which blues is built, and Guitar Blues features three of the most acclaimed blues players in America today. Hot Tuna’s Jorma Kaukonen, the legendary Robben Ford and the phenomenal rising star Ruthie Foster perform a very special evening of music at the Vilar Performing Arts Center in Beaver Creek on Tuesday, February 24 at 7:30pm.
The musicians will play both solo sets and together on stage, in an evening celebrating the heritage and soul of the Blues.
In a career that has already spanned nearly a half century, Jorma Kaukonen has been the leading practitioner and teacher of finger style guitar, one of the most highly respected interpreters of American roots music, blues and Americana, and is at the forefront of popular rock-and-roll. He was a founding member of two legendary bands, Jefferson Airplane and the still-touring Hot Tuna. Kaukonen is a Grammy nominee for his highly acclaimed Blue Country Heart album. In 1996, along with the other members of Jefferson Airplane, Kaukonen was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Robben Ford is one of the premiere electric guitarists today, particularly known for his blues playing, as well as his ability to be comfortable in a variety of musical contexts. A four-time Grammy nominee, he is founder of the legendary group the Yellowjackets. Chosen by the Beatles’ George Harrison for his Dark Horse tour (Harrison’s only solo tour), Ford has also toured or recorded with numerous music greats including Joni Mitchell, jazz legend Miles Davis, Jimmy Witherspoon, Phil Lesh, Little Feat, Claus Ogerman, Michael McDonald and Kiss. The Washington Post proclaimed, “blues guitarist Robben Ford leaves most of the competition sucking dust.”
Ruthie Foster is a Texas singer/songwriter whose blend of gospel, blues, folk and soul has drawn comparisons to Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald, as well as Tracy Chapman and Joan Armatrading. Her latest CD, The Phenomenal Ruthie Foster, charted in the top 15 albums on Billboard’s Blues chart, and is in the top 25 and still rising on Amazon’s overall music sales chart. “Phenomenal is no idle boast” wrote the Boston Herald, and according to the Washington Post, Ruthie “demanded attention with the sheer power of her mezzo-soprano” at her performance at the 2007 South by Southwest Music Conference.
You will not want to miss this unforgettable evening of music featuring the wonderful six-stringed instrument that is the heart and soul of the blues.
