Internationally renowned cellist Yo-Yo Ma will join with the students
of Celebrate the Beat, First Notes and Bravo! Young Composers to
celebrate arts education in Eagle County with the free performance
“Imagination Celebration,” taking place Saturday morning, June 26, at
the Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater.
Presented by the Vail Valley Foundation and Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival, Imagination Celebration will get underway at 9 a.m. in The Betty Ford Alpine Gardens with the Instrument Petting Zoo, before moving over to the Ford Amphitheater at 10:30 a.m. for the performances. The gates of the Amphitheater will open at 10 a.m. in anticipation of the free event.
The performance will get underway with the students of the dance and music education program Celebrate the Beat, performing a dance to John Lennon’s “Come Together”, choreographed by the program's Artistic Director Tracy Straus.
Motion will give way to music as the Second Grade First Notes Orchestra perform another Lennon classic, “Imagine”, before being joined by Yo-Yo Ma for a rendition of Mozart’s “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star”.
Bravo! Young Composers Ben West and Jeremiah Johnston will take the Amphitheater stage to debut their original composition, entitled “Coyoyote”, which was inspired by a collection of Native American tales. Ma and Bravo’s Artistic Director and flutist Eugenia Zukerman, along with percussionist Mark Trevino, are slated to accompany West and Johnston on the piece.
Yo-Yo Ma will take center stage for a performance of “The Swan” from Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, accompanied by Katherine Bellino on piano. A freshman at Evergreen High School, she started playing and studying the piano at the age of seven and has participated in many competitions under the guidance of Rodney Mobley.
The Imagination Celebration program will conclude as Ma welcomes the Celebrate the Beat dancers back to the stage for a performance of Bach’s “Prelude and Gigue #1 for Solo Cello”.
