Chris Del Bosco, who was born, raised and nearly died in Vail , puts a exclamation point on his amazing story with a crash that cost him an Olympic medal.
Chris Del Bosco, skiing for Team Canada due to his father's birthplace, nearly gave Vail another medal highlight in Vancouver. Del Bosco was particiapting in the first ever Olympic final in Ski Cross when he flew off a jump late in the race and crashed his chances at a least a bronze. Del Bosco, who nealry died after falling into creek in West Vail a few years ago, overcame a broken neck and a battles with alcoholism and numerous brushes with the law, to even compete in these winter games. After a few DUIs issued in Colorado a chance arose for him to try out for Canada Skicross team. He made it and found himself Sunday in the final four for the inaugural medal event. Del Bosco was solidly in third place with only a few meters left in race. Del Bosco was not content with postion so laid it all on the line in pursuit of gold but a jump left him airborne and out of control. He was unable to control his landing and fell losing more than the race but even a positon on the medal stand. Michael Schmid of Switzerland won the gold, Andreas Matt of Austria took silver and Audun Groenvold of Norway took bronze Del Bosco's father later remarked that his son said he knew he had bronze wrapped up but he didn't come to Vancouver to win bronze. |
