Long-time local Jeffrey Treneer Nicholls, missing since yesterday (8/31), has been found. At approximately 10:15 a.m., a resident found Nicholls 200 to 300 yards west of the end of Bald Mountain Road in East Vail. Nicholls, who apparently had spent the night outdoors, was evaluated on-scene by emergency services personnel and released to his wife.
The 67-year-old Nicholls suffers from Alzheimer’s disease and had been missing since noon on Sunday. Rescuers searched until 1:30 a.m. before calling off the effort due to poor visibility. The search resumed early this morning, when approximately 100 volunteers showed up to assist Vail Mountain Rescue, Vail Police and Vail Fire & Emergency Services in canvassing Vail’s neighborhoods. Eagle County Sheriff’s Office, Eagle County Ambulance District, Vail Resorts Security, Summit County Rescue Group, and Search and Rescue Dogs of Colorado also assisted in the search and rescue effort. The Salvation Army provided breakfast to the searchers and Blue Moose Pizza in LionsHead offered to provide lunch for all volunteers, had the search continued. The Vail Police Department wishes to thank all residents who received late night or early morning calls from the 911 call-back system for their patience and understanding.
