I’m on my way to a family wedding and though I’m tempted to write about great wedding songs, I thought I’d go one better and talk about great married couples in rock and roll. Now there are many a rock couple who are famous like Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain; however, like their modern day copies Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibard and She and Him’s Zooey Deschanel, they have never recorded together.
There are also the famous spouses of rock stars like Cher with Gregg Allman and Valerie Bertinelli’s now failed marriage to Eddie Van Halen. But this is about endearing love that gets transferred to the musical recording. Who are the best Rock and Roll husband and wife teams that actually recorded together?
Susan Tedechi and Derek Trucks- For years this was a marriage never consummated in the studio. There were occasional live appearances, mostly Tedeschi guesting with the Derek Trucks Band; however, recently they have taken their passion to the musical connection. Three years ago they officially formed the Tedeschi-Trucks band and music fans have benefited ever since. Though most observers figured it would be a one off as each artist pursued their strong singular identities, the musical couple has just released their second studio and third album overall. Blazing guitar and passionate singing make this rocking couple one of the best in history. Besides, Tedeschi is nice enough to allow her husband a few nights out with the boys and in this case that’s The Allman Brothers.
Ike and Tina Turner- Movies have been made about these feisty musicians though the testament to their true craft can be found in their powerful releases throughout the sixties and early seventies. They took us all higher as the practical inventors of soul music. And with powerhouse live performances that rivaled any act then or now, Ike and Tina were as explosive on stage as off. Though much appropriately has been made about Ike’s treatment of Tina after the glow wore off, their collaborations stand the test of time even though it may be difficult to separate the personalities.
Win Butler and Regine Chassagne- Though not the most popular by name, their careers and marriage are off to one of the most rollicking starts ever for a married couple. As leaders of the world’s biggest ‘indie’ band ever- Arcade Fire, Butler and Chassagne have two stellar projects already produced by their courtship that cement their presence on this list forever in 2010’s “The Suburbs” and 2007’s “Neon Bible.” Fans, who are anxiously anticipating their next delivery “Reflektor,” have already enjoyed their note perfect offspring to date.
Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash- A magically musical relationship made for the movies and thus a movie was made for them. Granted the bulk of the two’s best outputs were as solo artist or with other bands, Carter-Cash’s influence on the man in black is legendary. Her penning of “Ring Of Fire “ for Cash remains a pillar of the American songbook and if you ever wondered how two voices can sing as one listen to “Jackson” and hear love on a record.
